Welcome
Hi, I’m Ash (Ashley Rae).
I’m a multi-genre musician and trained community song leader.
I work across genres like hip-hop, R&B, lo-fi, acoustic, a cappella and more, using the voice as a tool for expression and creativity. I began in slam poetry which evolved into rapping and music production, and has since expanded into acoustic songwriting, vocal improvisation and participatory vocal facilitation.
I share music in multiple forms: multi-genre beats and lyrical "bars" as Ashtral Projects, and acoustic, community-centered performances and song/sound circles as Ashley Rae. Through performances, workshops, and circles, I encourage people to experience music as listeners as well as active participants.
I bring a playful, low-pressure energy into the spaces I hold, offering permission to let go, be a little silly, and express without needing to “get it right.” My work is especially for those who feel unsure, edgy, or disconnected from their voice.
The foundation of my offerings is permission: to return to the voice, explore creative expression, and embrace the freedom of play. Learn more about my background here.
Thanks for being here!
What I Offer
Song/Sound Circles
Community gatherings where we learn and explore song and sound. I draw from a curated library of 50+ community songs that I’ve learned from other song leaders and artists, including some of my originals. Based on the experience of the group, I guide circles that may include simple chants, layered harmonies, multi-part rounds, and vocal improvisation. Everyone is encouraged to participate at their own level, and we always start with playful warm-ups and vocal exercises to help open voices and lean into the space. My teaching style is lighthearted and encouraging. I show participants it’s okay to mess up, improvise, and playfully explore their voices without pressure.
Workshops
Freestyle Sessions- Guided experiences using different techniques to freestyle "off the dome,” honoring hip-hop culture. We explore multiple genres by practicing over a variety of beats, such as boom bap, drill, trap, R&B, soul, lo-fi, etc. that encourages not only rapping, but singing and spoken word as well. Participants learn tools to improvise, play with rhythm, sound, words, and how to express themselves freely and spontaneously in a supportive environment.
Prose and Poetry- Workshops focused entirely on words, where participants co-create and share poetry as a group. Sessions explore free writing, collaboration, and individual expression, holding space for each voice while building collective work.
Women Specific- Experiential gatherings where women explore voice, movement, and self-expression in a supportive space. These circles may include singing, journaling, dance and cycle tracking teachings, drawing on my FEMM certification and commitment to body literacy. The focus is on playful exploration and science-backed education.
Music Performances
Original music spanning hip-hop, R&B, spoken word, and acoustic styles, blending "feelingful" lyrics, playful energy, and the full emotional spectrum. Some pieces explore themes of body literacy, empowerment, and the relationship to self. Performances encourage listeners to connect, move, and experience music in an engaging and authentic way.
